Saturday, August 29th, former world champions meet for the second time when “Sugar” Shane Mosley (47-9-1, 39 KO’s) and Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga (31-8-1, 25 KO’s) square off at the Forum in Inglewood, California. With Don King Productions’ failed motion for an injunction, the Sugar Shane Mosley Promotions fight card will go on as planned and will be broadcast in the U.S. on Integrated Sports PPV. Watch Boxing: Mosley vs. Mayorga II Live Now This is the first fight in nearly two years for Mosley, who was last seen in Australia getting beaten by Anthony Mundine before a back ailment caused the fight to be stopped prior to the seventh round. The former three division world champion hasn’t beaten a top level opponent since his 2009 knockout over Antonio Margarito, and has won just one of his last six outings. The latter years of his career have seen him lose much of the speed and sharpness that made him Ring Magazine’s top pound for pound fighter in 2000 and 2001. At 43 years old, it’s safe to say we’ll see nothing more than remnants of the skills that made Sugar Shane a future Hall of Famer Mayorga hasn’t done much better in recent years. After making his way onto the world scene with a win over Andrew Lewis and two victories over Vernon Forrest, the former welterweight and super welterweight world champ hasn’t won a major fight in over 10 years, losing against every world class opponent he’s faced since 2003. In 2007 he won a close majority decision over a faded Fernando Vargas who had been knocked out in two prior bouts (by Shane Mosley). Despite his ring moniker, the Nicaraguan slugger fights more like a bull than a matador, and is well known for his pre-fight and post-fight antics and brazen disrespect of his opponents leading up to fight night. He managed to score two knockout wins last year after a three and a half year retirement; both came against nondescript opposition in the light heavyweight division. When the two first met back in 2008, Mosley scored a last second (literally) knockout win but Mayorga was only behind by one point at the time; it was anything but an easy night for Mosley. PPV Live Sports Stream. Though Mayorga’s wild-slugging approach to his fights is unconventional (in addition to his rumored training habits of drinking and smoking), it was effective against Shane’s power-boxing, and kept the fight close to the end. While these two post-40 year olds still hold some name recognition among fans, in all reality, this is a bout for nothing that will lead nowhere, and with both fighters’ best days far behind them, it’s hard to tell how much entertainment this bout can hold even if the two are evenly matched at this stage of the game. It’s a tough fight to call; Mosley looked pretty bad against Mundine, but Mayorga’s partying ways accompanied by the fact that he’s had to shed about 20 pounds to make weight will come into play here. Assuming he doesn’t land a blind haymaker, Mayorga’s gassed and stopped by the middle rounds.
